Above are photographs of my final piece which I have printed and bound together. I am really happy with the over all look of my design as I think that the images are quite implicit which looking interesting. Although I am quite disappointed with the print as it has printed out slightly smaller than I wants. But I do like the way that I have been bounded together as I think that it creates an interesting and professional outcome.
I was happy with my Formative Feedback as I didn’t have that many alterations to make to my final piece. David commented that the pace was good throughout although there isn’t much ‘downtime’ visually. He suggested to try and explore scale further within the design of the middle spread. Below are some experiments that I have tried to explore the pace and scale further. However I do not think that these designs are as balanced as the previous design. I am glad that I have tried them as I’m able to see how this design could be developed. Although, by increasing the scale of the images it fills up more of the negative which was an aspect that I liked on my previous design.
Some other improvements to be made to my piece were to increase the size of the inside margins. I originally had 12mm margins so I increased the inside margin by 2mm to allow extra room for binding the spreads. Some other adjustments to make before print were to change my images from PDF to JPEG. Beneath are the final editorial designs with the adjustments made before printing. I am happy with the visuals and how their is consistency throughout the design.
To show the group where we are at with our project so far we each presented our editorial spreads for further feedback. We were given a person to note down the feedback, Ellie was taking notes for me with aspects of my design which the group and David liked and also thought I could improve on. I thought this was helpful as I was stuck in a position where I couldn’t chose between colours for my editorial design. The three spreads which I showed were the unedited colours of the brown sugar on a white background, and the spread where the first cover is inverted and the other two are in black and white.
The group agreed that all three spreads inverted would look too heavy and the images in black on white don’t look as striking. They pointed out that the images were stronger in the brown colour so I should stick with that colour scheme as the images look almost 3d with the depth in colour. Because of this they advised that I tried the middle spread inverted but using brown instead of black as it would tie in with the imagery more. I have tried this although I still do not think that the images look as striking inverted.
Therefore I have decided to keep all three spreads with a white background and brown images. I think that the imagery within the spread looks more striking throughout and keeps consistency. Another think which David pointed out was whether I have tried the pull outs in brown, I have not tried this yet, I have kept all font black. So I have started to experiment with turning areas of the text brown to tie in with the colour scheme of the images and created depth within the piece. I have found that by using the same colour brown as the brown in the images it just looks black when it is printed. Because of this I have started to try using a lighter brown as there is more of a contrast. This shows the importance of printing throughout developing your designs as colours on screen can look so different to when printed.
The colour that I have decided to go with is a lighter dark brown as it ties in well with the rest of the colours in the images. I found that the lightest shades of brown made it more obvious of the choice of a brown colour scheme. Although I like that the darker shades of brown was more subtle, as there is still a contrast between the black body copy and brown heading but not a huge difference.
To experiment further with my editorial design I have tried to explore colour. I have worked with the first double page spray to see how well that works before trying to rest of the editorial design. I like the different colours that I have tried with the white background although I think that they look too pretty and visually appealing. Therefore I do not think that this works well with the context of the article that I want to communicate, as I want the audience to view sugar in a negative way. Because of this I like the original colour of the images as I think it enhances how the structure of sugar can change as it is heated up. I also like the black and white experiment and the inverted design, these look dark and communicate sugar negatively. I think that the inverted white on black design also looks like drugs, this could be an interesting angle to look at as there is some research that shows that sugar can be just as addictive as drugs.
Today we had a group tutorial assessing each others work which I found very useful! This allowed us not only to have feedback from our peers about our own work but also critique others work to look out for a range of different elements that are important in this editorial project. This has helped me to spot these aspects in my own editorial designs. From my group I had a list of very positive feedback which I was very happy with. They liked my overall concept and thought that I was communicating the context well as from the images they understood that sugar was the bad thing for you.
They advised me to change small things to my piece which I didn’t notice, this was very helpful hearing an outside perspective. As I was focusing more on the over all design rather than the type detailing at this stage there was a lot that I hadn’t paid much attention to. Some titles were in lower case and others were in upper case, as a group we decided that the upper case looked more effective. They also pointed out that because of the different point sized words in the titles to leading was off, I altered this manually so it looks more aesthetically pleasing. On the first page I have changed the weights of the titles, the heading in bold and the sub heading in regular, I think this works better with the hierarchy of the spread.
When I printed the spread off the stand firsts point size looked fine although I did not like that one paragraph was longer and one was shorter. Therefore I have changed it to 9pt which is the same point size as the rest of the text but is in a bold to show a difference between the stand first and the rest of the body text. My group felt like the stand first was too close to the top so I have moved it down so it is inline with the heading which I think works well. I have placed the subheading next to the stand first as it is the same length which I like the look of, but it also gives the heading more negative space around it which make it stand out more.
My group liked how the dripping sugar went is positioned over both pages as it ties them in together and they thought that this could be experimented further with the spaced sugar. Therefore I have added more single pieces of smashed sugar across the pages to create a stronger relationship between the double page spread.
From editing my first double page spread I then went on to editing my second and third spreads. I changed the leading of the headings which I think has improved them a lot and made sure that all of them are in upper case. I have kept the point size 9 as I think when printed this worked really well. I have gone through the body text to improve the rag and em & en dashes to help the pace of the article.
Regarding the images, my group said that as all of the images I have included go off the edge of the page, on the second spread they are both within the margins. I did this deliberately because of the layout design, although I have tried enlarging both of the images so they go off the page and I think this works well. When I printed all of my spreads the quality of the images were very clear which I was happy with. Although the last double page spread the sugar dripping down the page was quite pixelated. I have copied and pasted all of the images from photoshop into indesign so thought that maybe this is why the images may be pixelated. Therefore I have tried placing all of the pdf file images into the in design document and will try printing these out and see if the quality of the images improves.
I have used the typeface ‘Rockwell’ as I like the slab serif font which works well for the title. I have experimented with the layout of the type and how well it works with the images. I like how the type sits within the images and the way that the two separate images slightly overlap onto both pages as it creates a relationship between the double page spread.
I originally wanted to have a large image one side of the spread and the type on the opposite page. Although I found that there was too much writing on the one page and the image wasn’t strong enough to use on its own. I like the image chosen as I think that the texture of the bubbling sugar is interesting although compared to the first double page spread it is too dark and heavy.
I then decided to work with a different image which wasn’t as dark to tie in with the other images. Although I was still finding this difficult to work with as I didn’t like the layout designs I was creating. Therefore, I decided to change the grid system from a 7 column grid to a 9 which I found worked a lot better. Because of the large amounts of text that my article had I decided to include another image to work with the negative space on my double page spread.
Another way that I wanted to use some of the negative space is to experiment with type as I don’t think my first double page spread had much experimentations. I used the typeface Gill Sans as it is a sans serif font which works well with a large amount of text due to it’s legibility. It also has a range of different weights so decided to experiment using it for the large texts rather than Rockwell. The reasons for this is that I think Rockwell works well on it’s own without any experimentation with the type. I have adjusting the kerning, tracking and point size etc working within the columns. I like this as I think that it works well with hierarchy and the use of negative space.
From my developments I have decided that I am happy with the 9 column grid system, using the range of weights and the rectangular typography layout using Gill Sans. Therefore I want to apply these elements to my other double page spreads. The above images are my favourite double page spreads as I really like the image of the burnt sugar dripping. Although this image I found the most restrictive with my layout design as I wanted to stay within the grids system to keep a consistency throughout my spreads as well as keeping the text within the sugar drips.
I decided to go back to my first double page spread to develop the design further which is influenced by my other two double page spreads. By doing this there is a consistency through the three spreads which I like. I am happy with the stage that I am at as I think that the images are interesting and work with with the type so far. Although I think that I need to experiment further and pay more attention to the type detailing.
I started to sketch a range of different layout design by drawing influence from inspiration of editorial designs online. I have started to think about how I can communicate a relationship between type and image. I also want to use the unattractive images of sugar to show that sugar is the dietary source which Is killing us and show that fat is good for us by using pull out quotes. I like the white background designs as I think that it looks clean which connotes health and fitness.
